Terms and conditions

These are the terms on which I provide tuition and sell resources. They are meant to be read, so they are written plainly. Booking a lesson or buying a resource means you accept them.

Who you are dealing with

Lessons

• Lessons are normally one hour, at a time we agree in advance, online or in person.
• The first conversation, of about twenty minutes, is free and commits neither of us to anything.
• I will be ready at the agreed time. If I have to cancel, I will offer another time or refund the lesson, whichever you prefer.
• There is no contract term and no minimum number of lessons. A week’s notice ends the arrangement.

Cancelling a lesson

Please give at least twenty-four hours’ notice to cancel or move a lesson. Inside twenty-four hours the lesson is charged in full, because the time cannot realistically be filled. Illness and genuine emergencies are an exception, and I apply that sensibly rather than strictly.

Paying

I invoice monthly in arrears unless we agree otherwise, payable within fourteen days by bank transfer. Prices on this site are current but may change; any change is given at least a month in advance and never applies to lessons already booked.

Resources

The full terms on which you may use anything you buy are set out in the Resource Licence, which forms part of these terms. What follows is a summary; where the two differ, the licence governs.

• Resources are digital PDFs. To buy one, use Contact to buy on the Resources page. I email the file together with an invoice, payable within fourteen days by bank transfer.
• There are two licences. The individual licence is for one person — a pupil or parent for that pupil’s own study, or a single teacher or tutor for their own classes. The school licence is for a school where more than one teacher will use the resource with their classes.
• You may not resell it, upload it to a file-sharing or revision-notes site, or pass it on to other households or schools.
• Copyright in all material on this site, including every photograph, remains with Stephen Heath.

Refunds on resources

Under the Consumer Contracts Regulations you would normally have fourteen days to cancel. Because these are digital files sent straight away, when you order a resource you are asked to confirm that you want it sent now and that you understand your right to cancel ends once it has been sent. I send the file only after you have confirmed this, and my reply repeats it. Even so: if a file will not open, is not what the description said, or is simply not what you needed, tell me and I will refund it. I would rather have a fair reputation than a few pounds.

What I promise, and what I do not

I will teach to the best of my ability, which is considerable and well evidenced. I cannot guarantee a particular grade, offer or examination result, because no honest tutor can. Nothing here limits my liability for death or personal injury caused by negligence, or for fraud.

Safeguarding

I hold an enhanced DBS check and follow the statutory guidance I worked under in schools. Online lessons with pupils under 18 are given on the understanding that a parent or guardian is at home and may look in at any time, and I am happy for lessons to be recorded by the family for revision.

Tell me first, and quickly — most things are settled in one email. These terms are governed by the law of England and Wales.
